Letter regarding negotiations

This is a letter from our Superintendent, Dr. Lohwasser, on our negotiations with Dixie Teachers Association.

Dixie School District and Teachers Association Settle Negotiations

After meeting in negotiations since last April, the District and Dixie Teachers Association met in a fact-finding hearing on Friday, February 3, 2017. We mutually agreed in writing to a tentative agreement over the remaining outstanding issue for 2016-17 wages.

The District and Association presented facts to a three person fact-finding panel composed of a neutral fact-finding chair and a representative of the District and of the Association. After presentation of the facts, a significant number of various proposals by each party were exchanged. After more than ten hours of mediation, we coordinated a resolution with the panel chair and signed a tentative agreement.  Since a written agreement was reached, a written fact-finding report has not been issued.

While the parties tried to achieve a multi-year agreement, only a one year agreement was able to be reached.  That resolution was a salary schedule increase of 2% retroactive to July 1, 2016 and was added to the other items tentatively agreed to last June between the Association and District.

The salary increase is identical to that reached with the California School Employees Association for 2016-17.

The District and Association will present at public Board meetings in Spring, initial proposals for 2017-18. The District is committed to reaching a fair and fiscally responsible resolution with the Association as we move forward.

Board Holds Study Session Tomorrow

Changes in School Board Elections

your-vote-your-voice_(2).jpgEarlier this month, I attended a briefing at Marin County Board of Education's office on SB 415, an election law which requires most local governments to hold their elections in even years. The Dixie Board of Trustees has two options. Option 1 is to extend the terms of the three members we will elect in November 2017 to 2022 and the two members we will elect in November 2019 to 2024. Option 2 is to extend the terms of all sitting trustees one year. Dick Spotswood wrote about the law in his column yesterday. I encourage you to read Dick's column on the Marin IJ website.

District English Learner Advisory Committee Update

children-globe.jpgThis afternoon, I attended a productive meeting of our District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC). We will meet on February 14, 2017 from 3:30pm - 5:00pm at Vallecito Elemenatry School to review and discuss our Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).

We decided to move the meeting from the District Office to Vallecito to encourage participation from more parents and families. Children are welcome to attend our meeting. I might bring one of mine!

I appreciated our discussion at the end of our meeting about how we can increase public engagement.

Thank you Ms. Kitty!

Dear Families,

Many families are asking what they can do to honor Kitty's retirement. Her last day is January 31st. Here are some of the happenings: We will be collecting money towards an all cash group gift for her--- the envelope will be in the office marked Library, Mrs. Shelli King. There will also be cards to sign. You may, of course, present her with a card/gift individually. Students at every grade level are celebrating her with presentations and cards in the office. She will be a guest of honor at our Chinese New Year Valentine's Dance.

San Rafael Community Schools Initiative

In Fall 2016, Dr. Lohwasser and I represented our district at the formation of San Rafael Community Schools Initiative. The mission is to transform the 16 public schools in San Rafael into community schools. A community school is a place a set of partnerships between a school and community groups.

Initiative partners collaborate with an integrated focus on meeting the needs of children and their families in the areas of learning, physical health, mental health, housing, food and transportation. Initiative partners cultivate community engagement in order to improve student learning, healthier families and more resilient communities. In September 2016, Governor Brown signed SB 527 which establishes the Learning Communities for School Success Program. One of the top funding priorities is community schools. I hope we will investigate funding sources from this program in 2017.
